How one Arkansas entrepreneur turned a business challenge into a thriving manufacturing operation and a workplace where people can grow.
Success rarely follows a straight path, and Marcos Sierra knows that better than most.
Having spent much of his life pursuing new opportunities and overcoming challenges through hard work and determination, Sierra developed an entrepreneurial mindset long before he became a business owner. Today, as the owner of Sierra Group Roofing & Solar and founder of Maverick Metals Roofing Supply Company, he has built a thriving business by identifying challenges and turning them into opportunities. What began as a roofing company has grown into a manufacturing operation that is not only serving customers across the Mid-South but also creating jobs, investing in people, and strengthening Arkansas manufacturing.
Like many businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sierra Group Roofing & Solar faced significant supply chain disruptions. Materials became difficult to source, projects were delayed, and uncertainty became the norm. For Sierra, the situation was frustrating, but it also revealed a gap in the market that couldn't be ignored.
"We lost over 57 projects because we couldn't get our hands on material," Sierra recalled. "At that point, we knew we had to find a different solution."
Instead of waiting for supply chains to recover, Sierra invested in equipment that would allow his company to manufacture its own metal roofing products. What he quickly realized was that the problem extended far beyond his own business. Despite northeast Arkansas being home to some of the country's largest steel producers, many finished roofing products were being manufactured out of state before being shipped back into Arkansas.
That realization became the foundation for Maverick Metals Roofing Supply Company.
What started as a way to serve his own customers soon evolved into a manufacturing business supplying contractors, distributors, and building material providers throughout the region. Growth accelerated when SRS Distribution, one of the nation's largest building materials distributors, began purchasing products from the company. What Sierra expected to be a local partnership quickly expanded into multiple markets, creating new opportunities for growth and investment.
Today, Maverick Metals continues to expand its manufacturing capabilities while serving customers throughout Arkansas and neighboring states. For Sierra, however, the company's success is about more than production numbers and business growth.
One of the things he is most proud of is the ability to manufacture products locally using materials produced in the region.
"American-owned, American-made, Arkansas-built," he said. "That's something we're very proud of."
That pride extends beyond the products themselves. Throughout the interview, Sierra repeatedly returned to the people behind the business and the impact the company has had on their lives.
While many manufacturers compete solely on wages, Sierra has focused on building a workplace where employees can succeed professionally while maintaining a healthy balance with their families. He understands that people want meaningful careers, but they also want to be present for the moments that matter.
Whether it's a parent attending a child's softball game, adjusting schedules around school activities, or simply having the flexibility to be involved in family life, Sierra believes businesses should adapt when possible.
"We like to hire adults and treat them like adults," he said. "If we're hitting our goals and taking care of our customers, people should be able to enjoy their lives too."
That approach has helped create a culture where employees are not only building careers but building futures. Sierra spoke proudly about team members who have purchased their first homes, invested in themselves, and created opportunities for their families through the stability and growth they've found within the company.
"The coolest thing is seeing how much people grow," he said. "You look back at someone a couple years later and see a completely different person because of the opportunities they've created for themselves."
While people remain at the center of the business, innovation is helping drive its future. Sierra and his team are investing heavily in technology, automation, and artificial intelligence to improve efficiency, streamline operations, and enhance the customer experience. From advanced inventory systems to AI-powered tools that help employees make faster, more informed decisions, the company is embracing technology as a way to strengthen both its operations and its workforce.
"We're on a journey to become an extremely technology-driven company," Sierra said.
That commitment to continuous improvement is one of the reasons he joined the Reel Advanced Manufacturing Program (RAMP). A longtime supporter of business accelerator programs, Sierra believes that surrounding yourself with other growth-minded leaders can dramatically shorten the learning curve and help businesses scale more effectively.
"I'm a big believer in accelerators," he said. "You learn from people who have already faced the challenges you're trying to solve."
He also credits much of the company's growth to the partnership he shares with his wife, who works alongside him in the business managing human resources, accounting, and key operational functions. Together, they have embraced learning, invested in their development, and continually sought ways to improve both the business and themselves.
Looking ahead, Sierra has ambitious plans for continued growth, including expanding into new markets, increasing manufacturing capacity, and bringing even more innovation to the industry. Yet despite the company's rapid growth and future goals, his focus remains unchanged.
For Marcos Sierra, success isn't measured solely by what comes off the production line. It's measured by the opportunities created, the people impacted, and the communities strengthened along the way.
Through Sierra Group Roofing & Solar and Maverick Metals Roofing Supply Company, he is building more than roofing products. He is building careers, creating opportunities, and helping shape the future of manufacturing in Arkansas.
