Powell Fabrication: Building a Smarter Way to Grow
From custom welding to automated manufacturing, Richard Powell is building a business designed for what comes next.
When Richard Powell started Powell Fabrication in 2020, the business looked very different from what it does today. Based in Rogers, Arkansas, Richard started out doing general welding and fabrication work, including projects like handrails and other custom jobs. With welding experience dating back to the age of 15, he knew the trade well. What he began to see, however, was an opportunity to take the company into a much larger market.
Around Thanksgiving, Powell Fabrication began shifting its focus toward the mining industry, supplying businesses connected to rock quarries, crushers, and asphalt plants. Richard saw an opening in the market where he could compete through shorter lead times and faster production. That decision has become an important part of the company's growth and has helped Powell Fabrication expand beyond traditional welding into a broader range of manufacturing services.
Today, Powell Fabrication offers welding, machining, CNC plasma cutting, CNC mill and lathe work, mass production, and on-site repairs. The company describes itself as a full-service fabricator focused on precision and quality, with the ability to take on projects of different sizes and bring customers' ideas to life.
A major turning point came within the last year when Richard invested in a laser machine. For a business that had operated with only two employees until recently, the new equipment opened up a different way to think about growth. Instead of immediately hiring more people to increase production, Richard is looking at how automation can allow the shop to do more with the people and space it already has.
That has become the strategy moving forward. Richard is planning to add three to four automated machines that can operate with minimal supervision, allowing him to increase capacity while keeping the business lean. For a one-person operation, the goal is to build a shop that can produce more without requiring Richard to personally handle every part of the process.
“I want to maximize what I can do as a one-person shop before I start adding people.”
That approach is especially important as Richard manages the financial realities of running a growing manufacturing business. Material costs, tariffs, equipment investments, and cash flow all play a role in deciding where the next dollar should go. Rather than making those decisions based solely on short-term growth, he is focused on building the infrastructure that will allow the company to grow sustainably.
The next year is already taking shape. Richard wants to push Powell Fabrication's annual revenue beyond $500,000, up from its current range in the mid-$300,000s to low-$400,000s. He also plans to launch a new mining supply company, creating another opportunity to build on the relationships and industry knowledge he has developed through Powell Fabrication.
RAMP is becoming part of that process. Richard joined the program because he sees value in connecting with other manufacturers and learning from companies that have already faced the decisions he is now working through. When is the right time to hire? When does buying another machine make more sense? How much inventory should a growing manufacturer keep on hand? These are the kinds of questions Richard hopes to work through with the RAMP network.
“The biggest thing for me is networking and being able to bounce ideas off other manufacturers.”
For Powell Fabrication, growth is not about simply becoming a bigger shop. It is about becoming a more efficient one. Richard is using automation, new equipment, and relationships within the manufacturing community to build the foundation for the next stage of the business.
What started as a small welding operation has grown into a full-service fabrication and manufacturing company with its sights set on a new industry, new equipment, and more than $500,000 in annual revenue. With RAMP, Richard is continuing to figure out what the next step looks like and how to make sure the business is ready when the opportunity comes.
Powell Fabrication is building for growth, one machine, one customer, and one opportunity at a time.
